Saturday 17th October saw the second OUSL v. CSOL Luxembourg golf tournament for the Challenge Cup, this time at the Belenhaff course which was in superb condition, having fully recovered from the summer’s blistering heat. Another fine autumn day saw 10 enthusiastic golfers, with a wide range of handicaps, set off under clear blue skies. The Light Blues all wearing appropriate Cambridge kit, thanks to the pre-match preparations by the team dresser, Norry Welch.
12 holes in a Texas scramble (if you don’t know, don’t ask) gave three teams ample time to display their skills (or not!), with handicaps set according to a formula the complexity of which rivalled that of the Schleswig-Holstein question Notwithstanding Cambridge’s resounding victory in the first varsity match at the Grand Ducal last year, and despite fielding two teams against the single Oxford entry, the Dark Blues this time romped to victory, inspired by their captain’s golden touch around the greens and strong support from the rest of his team.
The Sir Nicholas Golden Putter for closest the pin was not awarded !
After an excellent lunch in the clubhouse (see photos) the Varsity Golf Challenge Cup was presented to the Captain of the winning team, who immediately invited a return match next summer. Any CSOL golfers who would be interested in taking part are strongly encouraged to make themselves known to this year’s organizer at nforwood@gmail.com.
