Claude and Laurent on the stand before the onslaught of students
Once again the Cambridge Society had a team at the Ministry of Higher Education and Research’s Student Fair held in the spectacular surroundings under the Industrial architecture at Belval at the end of October.
Notwithstanding the huge disincentive of the high post-Brexit tuition fees that most students in Europe who wish to study in the UK now face, there remains considerable interest among students in Luxembourg who want to find out about studying in the UK in general and in Cambridge in particular. And while some were just curious, attracted by the magic of the name “University of Cambridge”, there were many who had before the Fair examined the university website in some detail and had clear ideas of what they wanted to do. These are students who would contribute a great deal to university in the UK.
On both the Thursday and Friday mornings we had queues of students wanting information and explanations, and our team of three, Claude Ewert, Laurent Storoni, and John Speed, were kept busy. The afternoons were generally quieter. Laura Muller helped us during the lunchtime period, enabling the other stallholders time to find some lunch. Thanks to everyone!!

A busy scene on Friday morning
So long as there remains interest from students in Luxembourg to find out about studying at Cambridge and indeed to apply to Cambridge, we will carry on supporting them. This was the last year for students with a British parent to benefit from the much lower “home” fees if they apply for entry by the autumn of 2027, i.e in October 2026. It remains to be seen whether the level of interest drops off significantly next year at the Fair when all students in Luxembourg will face tuition fees in Cambridge ranging from £30 000 per annum for the humanities to over €70 000 for medicine and veterinary science..
Having said that, I personally found it extremely satisfying to speak to so many interesting, very intelligent and mature young students over the two days of the Fair. I’ll be back next year!
