Dear Cantabrigians,
We are very pleased to invite you to an outstanding evening taking you back in time to Roman Britain in the company of Martin Millett, Emeritus Laurence Professor of Classical Archaeology in the University of Cambridge who will talk to us on recent advances in geophysical survey and remote sensing techniques which have allowed archaeologists to map not only buried sites but entire landscapes without excavation. Combined with traditional research methods, they offer new understanding of Roman provincial landscapes, from urban sites to rural settlement. This talk explores these approaches through fieldwork in Roman Britain (present-day Yorkshire).

This talk is organised by the Cambridge Society and the National Institute for Archaeological Research (INRA). It will take place in the highly appropriate Gallo-Roman Theatre at Dalheim which is one of the most important Gallo-Roman sites in the region. The well-preserved theatre dates from the 2nd century AD.
Professor Millett’s talk will begin at 18h30 and will last, with the Q&A, until about 20h00. It will be followed by an (optional) dinner at the Restaurant “A Schmatten” in nearby Welfrange (further details below).

Some practical information
Parking: Dalheim is not over-supplied with parking areas. There is a small one close to the Commune building in the centre, and a second one closer to the theatre. Otherwise, it is a question of finding spaces along the roads. Parking is free in Dalheim. We will be asking the commune to signpost the parking areas on the day. Wherever you park, there will a little walk to the theatre, but Dalheim is not a very big place!
The theatre itself has wheelchair access.
Keeping warm!: We are hoping, of course, for a delightful balmy June evening, but David Weis of INRA warns that the theatre can be a bit chilly as it is set in a valley. There will be cushions and blankets, but make sure you have some warm clothes, taking into account the weather on the day.
The theatre is covered so in the unlikely event of a shower (!) you will be protected.
Registration: The event is free, but in order that we have an idea of numbers, if you are coming, please send an email to President@cambridgesociety.lu with the names of the people who will attend the talk, and also tell me if you will go on to the dinner (see invitation below).
Invitation to the post-Talk Dinner at 20:30 at
Restaurant “A Schmatten”, at Welfrange
We are pleased to invite you to the Restaurant “A Schmatten”, 1 Saangewee, Welfrange L-5698 after Professor Millett’s talk for a relaxed dinner where you will be able to continue your conversations on the many interesting issues raised by Professor Millett. Welfrange is very close to Dalheim.
Frank Thein and his staff at “A Schmatten” will offer us an excellent three-course dinner with a choice of dishes. The cost of the dinner without drinks is €62 for the food, you will be able to choose whatever you would like in the way of drinks to accompany the dishes. The restaurant has a very good choice of wine by the glass .
If you tell me in the email referred to above that you wish to attend the dinner, I will send you a link that will enable you to purchase tickets and make your payment
This is a rather special event, and we look forward to seeing many people there. Some of you may have attended the recent most interesting talk given by Professor Alan Bowman of Oxford University organised by INRA and the Oxford Society at the Musée Dräi Eechelen on the Vindolanda Tablets: this new talk by Professor Martin Millett continues the historical series!
