Cambridge Society Michaelmas Dinner, 13 November at Cercle Münster

On Thursday 13 November alumni and guests of the Cambridge Society came together at the Cercle Münster for the annual Michaelmas Dinner. In welcoming everyone to the evening, including our two distinguished guests, Joanne Olivier, the British Ambassador and Christina Alexopoulou the Greek Ambassador, John Speed the new President of the Society paid tribute to long and distinguished service of Martin Curwen, who decided to stand down as President at the Annual General meeting in May. Martin remains a member of the Committee where his calm and wise counsels are invaluable.

Our two Ambassadors addressed the diners during the meal. Joanne Olivier spoke briefly of her interesting career as a barrister before joining the Foreign Office in 2009 and spoke of her role since she presented her credentials to Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume in April 2025. She also encouraged the Society to continue its work of promoting the University in Luxembourg and assisting students interested in applying to and studying at Cambridge through our participation in the Student Fairs of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, and the programme of practice interviews that we organise together with the Oxford Society for students who have applied to our Universities. In this we are helping one of the UK’s important exports. Christina Alexopoulou thanked us for inviting her and spoke of the importance of fostering centres of academic excellence such as Cambridge.

After enjoying the dinner prepared for us by the Cercle, we adjourned to the Library for coffee, where participants continued their interesting conversations for quite some time.

The Diners then went off into the night having had an enjoyable evening in excellent company.
